Mayoral control breakfast
The Rochester Business Journal will present "The Pros and Cons of Mayoral Accountability" from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23, at the Rochester Plaza Hotel. Speakers that will share their views and answer questions: Mayor Robert Duffy; Margaret Raymond, research fellow at Stanford University; Adam Urbanski, president of the RTA; Van Henri White, RCSD board member; and Kenneth Wong, chair, Department of Education at Brown University. ROCLA's dinner and awards
The Rochester Committee on Latin America will hold its 2010 rice and beans dinner and White Dove Awards at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 19, at Downtown Presbyterian Church, 121 North Fitzhugh Street. Tickets: $15 to $25 per person (sliding scale). Reservations: Marilyn Kaiser, 293-3194.
Gage: the forgotten feminist
The First Unitarian Church will present "Matilda Joslyn Gage: Bringing Her into History," a lecture about the "forgotten feminist" who harbored slaves, was an adopted Native American, and fought for the separation of church and state. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 15, at 220 Winton Road South.
Muslims and Christians together
The faith community will present "Faith Matters: Muslims and Christians in Conversation," the first of a three-part series on the two faiths. The first presentation and discussion, "Core Beliefs," will be held at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, at The Islamic Center of Rochester, 727 Westfall Road. Muhammad Shafiq and C DeNise Yarbrough will be the facilitators. Information: 442-0117.
Treating war trauma
SUNY Brockport's Visual Studies Workshop will present a talk and reading by Nathan Lewis who will discuss serving in Iraq and the Combat Paper Project, which is an international collective that utilizes paper, book, and print workshops to help people suffering from war trauma. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, at Visual Studies Workshop, 31 Prince Street.
Review of ‘Good Soldiers'
Friends of the Rochester Public Library will present a brown bag book discussion on Washington Post and Pulitzer Prize winner David Finkel's book, "The Good Soldiers," at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16. Canandaigua VA psychologist James Bridges will discuss Finkel's account of spending a year with American forces in Iraq.
