Public input on mayoral control
The City School Board will hold a public hearing on Mayor Bob Duffy's proposal to consolidate the Rochester School District with city government at 5: 30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, at the district's Central Office, 131 West Broad Street. The purpose of the meeting is to obtain citizen feedback.
Where can you find flamingos?
The Genesee Land Trust will present "Birding through National Parks," a discussion with Randi Minetor and her husband, Nic, local authors and photographers who have visited over 262 of the 392 US national parks. Their presentation, an evening of photography and birding education, is at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 8, at the Brighton Memorial Library, 2300 Elmwood Avenue.
Fixing broken America
RIT will host "A Path Back to Prosperity for America," a talk with Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist David Cay Johnston at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, at RIT's Ingle Auditorium. Johnston will look at the current economic crisis and what can be done to fix it.
Student march against mayoral control
Rochester Students for a Democratic Society will hold a march on City Hall protesting mayoral control at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, with a rally and speak out at the Liberty Pole at 4:30 p.m. The march will leave the Liberty Pole for City Hall at 5:30 p.m.
Rochester's gay history
The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley has begun its documentation project to record the social, political, and economic history of the LGBT community of the Rochester region. Project organizers will be gathering information and documents during the next six months and they encourage individuals and organizations with pertinent information to contact Nicole Menarchem at 244-8640, Ext. 32 or niclolem@gayalliance.org.
Colorectal cancer screenings for uninsured
A group of barbers and hair salons will hold "Cut the Cancer" to raise awareness of cancer risks in the African American and Latino communities from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, March 8, at the following shops: Classy Cuts, 569 Thurston Road; Clippers Barber Shop, 1070 Hudson Avenue; New Creations Unisex, 647 Jefferson Avenue; and Isla Del Encanto Unisex Shop, 1000 Norton Street. The Cancer Services Program of Monroe County provides free colorectal cancer screenings for men and women ages 40 to 64 who are either uninsured or underinsured. Information: 244-3071 or 233-8441.
More on mayoral control
The Baobab Cultural Center will host a discussion on the pros and cons of mayoral control at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 8, at 728 University Avenue. School Board member Van White and Gerard Wenzke, retired CEO of First Niagara Bank, will be guest speakers. A $5 donation is suggested.
