Support for RCSD parents
The Rochester school district will hold "Create a Masterpiece: From Cradle to College," a conference to support parents in their child's education from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, at the Radisson Hotel Riverside, 120 East Main Street. Karen Mapp, professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, is the keynote speaker. The event is free and open to the public. Registration: 262-8000, Ext. 1221.
Hearings on schools and Council budgets
Rochester City Council will hold budget hearings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, and Tuesday, June 8. City Council will also hold a public hearing on the Rochester Board of Education budget at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9. All of the hearings are open to the public and will be held at City Hall in Council Chambers.
Grants workshop
The New York State Office of Parks will hold a grant application workshop for park development and planning, acquisition, and historic preservation and heritage area programs from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, at Genesee County Park and Forest, Interpretive Nature Center, 11095 Bethany Center Road, East Bethany. Bach at JPC luncheon
The Judicial Process Commission will hold its annual fund-raising luncheon at noon on Wednesday, June 9, at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, 121 North Fitzhugh Street. The featured speaker will be Amy Bach, local attorney and author of "Ordinary Justice: How America Holds Court." Bach is the recipient of the 2010 Kennedy Book Award. Cost: $30 per person.
Church women talk rights
The Church Women United will hold their June program, "Human Rights and Wrongs for Women" from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 4, at the Brighton Town Park, Carmen Clark Lodge, 777 Westfall Road. Registration at the door: $3. Information: 342-2790.
Design Monroe Avenue
The Town of Brighton will hold a Monroe Avenue design charrette from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, at the Brighton High School, 1150 Winton Road. The purpose of the charrette is to guide the creation of a vibrant main corridor and commercial base for Brighton.
Civil disobedience doc
The Rochester Committee on Latin America will present the documentary film "People to People: Civil Disobedience Breaks the US Embargo of Cuba," at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, 120 North Fitzhugh Street. The film tells the story of Pastors for Peace who defied the US embargo and travel ban by delivering medical and school supplies to Cubans.
River cleanup
The MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at the University of Rochester will hold the Gandhi Riverkeepers river cleanup at 10 a.m. on Saturday May 29. Participants should meet at the Interfaith Chapel on the River Campus. A Planet Earth film will be shown prior to the cleanup. The event is free and open to the public.
