DEVELOPMENT: MCC closing in on new downtown site

Monroe Community College has reportedly moved three sites to the top of its list for a new downtown campus. Other sites are not completely out of the running, though, officials said.

The three sites are: a parking lot on State Street owned by Eastman Kodak; parcels of the new Midtown site; and a mix of property near St. Joseph's Park.

There are benefits and problems with each of the sites. The Kodak parking lot is across from the High Falls District, but away from the proposed Main Street bus terminal which many students use. The Midtown and St. Joseph Park sites are in the heart of downtown and could further its rejuvenation, but both have parking limitations. The St. Joseph site would require property acquisitions from multiple owners.

A decision on a final site could be made between October and December.

If MCC is truly interested in doing what is best for this community, then there is only one acceptable option: stay at the Sibley Building and work with Winn Development, the Boston company planning a $200 million renovation of the Sibley, to make the building sufficient for MCC purposes. Without MCC, the likelihood of a Sibley Building rebirth is dim at best. If the cavernous Sibley Building goes empty, downtown will take a swift turn for the worse.

President Kress, MCC does not need a downtown "campus," it needs a downtown home. Does the Eastman School have a downtown "campus"? No, and yet they manage to be the best music school in the world. MCC will continue to be a fine institution if its home is a single historic structure. The decision to do so will leverage considerable economic prospects for our downtown. Don't screw this up.

MAT I and I would assume most taxpayers would agree with you. The MCC Downtown campus is nothing but a waste of $20-$75 million of taxpayer dollars and will not improve or will only slightly improve the overall education of our community.

NYS residents are being crushed by already too high taxes that are ever rising yet we want to waste money on projects like this that will do nothing to improve downtown.

Wow...spend $72 in taxpayer dollars to just eliminate property from our tax base. What a wonderful idea....and we wonder why we are broke. How about we give free bus passes to everyone so they can just bus it to the Brighton Campus. Better yet...an MCC Shuttle that runs every hour on the hour... it will save tax dollars - free up more space downtown for REAL development.
