City Council member Adam McFadden is hosting a public forum for neighbors and the community on the city's nuisance points system. The forum is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4.

The next night, Thursday, August 5, there will be a meeting for business owners on the nuisance points system from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Both events are at City Hall, 30 Church Street, in the third floor Council chambers.

A few months ago, Council passed a six-month moratorium on the assignment of nuisance points so they could improve the program. The goal, McFadden says, is to make sure the system is effective and impartially enforced.

Nuisance points are often assigned to the city's bars and nightclubs. According to the City Charter, the points are given out for violations of Penal Law and Municipal code provisions that "substantially and seriously interfere with the interest of the public in the quality of life and total community environment, commerce in the City, property values and the public health, safety and welfare."

Why would we need a 6 month moratorium to examine a system that's been in place and working well for a long time? Adam McFadden can be bought by bar owners but the NYS Liqour Authority can't. Direct all of your complaints directly to them. It's clear that our city government cares more about bar owners profits than the quality of life of its residents.

Apparently this system that has been working well for a long time disproportionately assigns nuisance points to clubs that cater to African American clients.
