Red-light cameras to come before county committee tonight

The Ways and Means Committee of the County Legislature is expected to vote tonight on an intermunicipal agreement that would allow the city to install red-light cameras.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the County Office Building, 39 West Main Street. The public can address the committee at the beginning of the meeting.

The county owns and operates traffic signal hardware in the city. The city needs access to implement the red-light program.

The agreement would clear the way for the city to install red-light cameras at up to 50 intersections. It is unclear when the program would begin, but September has been mentioned as a possible date.

If Ways and Means votes in favor, the agreement would move to a vote of the full Legislature. The next Lej meeting is Tuesday, August 10.

First let me comment on the first comment....information from a post on a Meet Up website may not be the most factual information.

I'm all in favor of camera at intersections. Heck I want them at ALL intersections. I want every registered car owner--I don't even car who is driving--to take the responsibility for their cars running red lights, causing accidents and otherwise creating dangerous driving environments.

There probably isn't a day that goes by that I don't see a near miss at an intersection simply because someone doesn't slow down and stop when they see yellow and red lights.

And while I'm at it....turn signals. Use of turn signals is a sign of intelligent life.

Tom... The meetup site is providing a list of resources to review. Many of them from quite official sites and sources. You should look at it.

I also was on the fence about allowing red light cameras. Mainly because I have seen so much horrible, dangerous driving in regard to red light issues. However, I have come to understand that when implemented, these cameras don't in fact make intersections safer. First, they increase the incidents of rear end collisions from people slamming on the brakes to ( they think ) avoid tickets. In addition, the cameras cost a HUGE amount of money. Even when enough tickets are issued to "break even". ( several hundred per month. ) What have you accomplished? You haven't made the city safer. All you have done is send millions of dollars of city resident's money to Arizona and Australia ( where Redflex is based. ). That hurts our economy. Furthermore red light cameras in the city make it less attractive for commuters and thus businesses. Are we actively trying to get rid of ALL the business in the city?
