Interested in real estate development?

The Rochester Downtown Development Corporation will present "New York State: How to Succeed in Real Estate" from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4, at the Radisson Hotel Rochester Riverside, 120 East Main Street. The event features speakers who are experts on urban real estate development in Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo. Tickets: $30 for RDDC members and $35 for non-members. Reservations: 546-6920.

Peace vigil

The Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace will hold a peace vigil recognizing the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima at the round-about traffic circle in downtown Avon at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 6.

Reading about race

The Moving Beyond Racism book group will hold a discussion at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 2, at Barnes & Noble in Pittsford Plaza. The book that will be discussed is "Mixed" by Angela Nissel. It is not necessary to have read the book to join the meeting.

Get on the path to college

MCC will hold two information sessions for its Gateway to College program at the Damon City Campus, 228 East Main Street, room 4037. The sessions are 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, and at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4. Information: 262-1480.

Energy rate hike hearing

The State Public Service Commission has scheduled an August 3 public hearing on proposed RG&E and NYSEG energy rate increases. The hearing is 5 to 8 p.m. at City Hall, 30 Church Street, in the City Council chambers. In the first year of the rate plan, RG&E customers would see a 5 percent electric rate hike and a 3.8 percent natural gas rate increase. That amounts to a $3.70 increase per month on the average electric bill, and a $3.51 per month increase on the average natural gas bill.
