Leaf disposal explained

The Town of Penfield's Energy and Environmental Advisory Committee will present "Making Sense of Leaf Disposal" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, at the Penfield Town Hall, 3100 Atlantic Avenue. The session will provide residents with information on a range of alternatives to manage leaf disposal to prepare for the fall season. Composting, mulching, and commercial pickups will be discussed.

Localvore challenge

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York is launching its first NY Localvore Challenge. The challenge is to eat only foods produced locally using earth- sustainable methods during the month of September. Participants can choose to be a localvore for one day, one week, or the entire month. All foods have to be produced within 250 miles, preferably 100 miles of Rochester. Registration is required: www.nylocavorechallenge.com. Fees: $5 to $45, with all funds raised from the event going to support NOVA-NY's educational work and technical support for organic farmers and gardeners, as well as advocacy for organic farming legislation. Information: 271-1979. Also, the Cornell Cooperative Extension will host the second annual Localvore Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, at 249 Highland Avenue. The fair will feature locally grown and produced vegetables, fruit, and dairy foods sampling.

Durand birding walk

The Rochester Birding Association will hold a walk and search for thrushes and other migrant birds in Durand Eastman Park on Sunday, August 29. Meet at the Lake Shore Boulevard parking lot at 8 a.m. Information: 381-2189.

Arts grants meeting

The community arts grant mandatory seminar for arts groups based in Livingston County will be presented by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25, at the Lakeville United Church of Christ, 5687 Big Tree Road, Lakeville. Nonprofits, artists, and art groups interested in grants can apply at the seminar. Information: 243-6785 or www.gvcaonline.org.

State AG debate

WXXI will host a debate among the Democratic attorney general candidates next week, airing on the radio at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, on 1370 AM and 91.5-2 FM, and telecast at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV.
