Mexico's coffee farm workers
The Rochester Committee on Latin America will present "What Drives Mexicans to Risk Death Crossing the Border (and how has this exodus led to the feminization of rural Mexico)?" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, 121 North Fitzhugh Street. Writer and photographer Joseph Sorrentino, who has documented the plight of Mexican coffee farm workers since 2003, will lead the discussion. Some of his photos will be exhibited.
Hear Reverend Wright
The Mt. Olivet Baptist Church will host "An Evening with Reverend Jeremiah Wright" at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 10. Wright's sermons and his relationship to then candidate Barack Obama became a focus of national attention during the last presidential election. Tickets are $25 each. They can be purchased at the church at 141 Adams Street from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. until noon on Thursday, September 9. No tickets will be sold at the door on the night of the event. Training in restorative justice
The MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence will host "Restorative Rochester," a weeklong series of seminars and talks about the restorative justice movement, which focuses on the therapeutic needs of individual victims and offenders rather than the principals of state and federal law. The series, which is free and open to the public, begins on Saturday, September 11, and ends on Saturday, September 18, at the University of Rochester. UR launches public flu clinic program
The University of Rochester's School of Nursing will launch its seasonal flu clinic program on Saturday, September 11. The nursing staff will administer seasonal flu vaccines through November at more than 50 public clinics. Most insurance plans cover the cost of the flu vaccine, but insurance ID cards are required at the time of vaccination. Otherwise, the cost is $30. Labor Day rally and parade
The Rochester Labor Council, AFL-CIO will host the 25th Annual Labor Day celebration on Monday, September 6, starting with a 10 a.m. rally to support labor's agenda at 475 East Avenue in front of the Boy Scouts of America Building. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at East Avenue and Alexander Streets and continue to East Main Street and the Liberty Pole where it will turn southwest toward Plymouth Avenue.
Peace vigil
The faith community will hold its Bring Them Home Vigil as a reminder that troops are still in Iraq and Afghanistan, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, on the corners of Park Avenue and Culver Road
