ARTS: Cool theater
By Christine Carrie Fien on May. 20th, 2008
Before he joined the Rochester Broadway Theatre League, Don Jeffries caught a summer production of "Rent" at the Auditorium Theatre. "I left at intermission because it was so hot," he says. "It had to be over 100 in the theater." | In the past, RBTL closed the theater
in the summer and sponsored events in the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center - now known as CMAC - instead. But with the Broadway season expanding into the summer and the chance to lure more big-name shows like "Wicked," RBTL has decided to air condition the Auditorium Theatre. | A $30,000 state grant will cover about 10 percent of the cost of the project, says Jeffries, RBTL's president. A combination of grants and long-term financing will cover the rest, he says. | "We'll be running programs through the summer at the Auditorium Theatre," Jeffries says. | The theater will be air conditioned only when it has programming, he says. | "Wicked" goes up on May 28 and was 90 percent sold-out as of late last week. | RBTL's 2008-2009 season includes "Legally Blonde The Musical," "Mamma Mia!" "The Drowsy Chaperone," "Jersey Boys," and "The Wizard of Oz."
