CHILD CARE: YMCA temporarily plugs child care gap

Across the county, 931 children are losing their county child care subsidies, effective September 1. Sixty-five of those kids, enrolled in YMCA of Greater Rochester child care programs, however, will get an extra two months, thanks to the organization's board.

The board decided to use YMCA money, about $80,000, to cover the costs of keeping the children enrolled temporarily.

"What we're trying to do is buy some time," said Mary Kay Walrath, YMCA's vice president of development and communications.

The hope is that families, single parents especially, can make alternate arrangements instead of taking drastic action, like leaving school or jobs. In the long term, the organization and families will have to look for other placements or alternative funding, says John Crowe, chair of the YMCA board.

The county tightened eligibility requirements for children care subsidies earlier this month, after the state cut funding. Officials said the county hadn't been using all of its prior grants for child care. County officials dispute that claim. The state, meanwhile, has denied the county's requests to restore the funding.

Let's not be afraid to call these 'subsidies' what they really are ... stolen property. My concern is /not/ with helping others, that is, actual voluntary charity from others, friends, etc. The problem is when one's neighbors are forcibly separated from their property that is then given to others to whom it does not belong. The difference between that scenario and slavery is one of degree rather than kind. If the YMCA's funding is all private, then that's a wonderful charitable move on that organization's part.
