The boards of the Monroe County Library System and the Rochester Public Library will form a joint task force to examine internet policies.

The decision, announced at a joint session of the boards this morning, comes in the wake of a threat by Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks to cut off $7.5 million in funding for the Rochester libraries' Central Services if it didn't alter its policies to prohibit the viewing of pornography.

The task force will look at a number of issues, including placement of computers, to prevent children from inadvertently viewing objectionable material. It will also look into other available filtering software in an attempt to find programs that can block pornographic images "without regard to the Web site source or associated text," according to the boards' resolution.

The task force is to report back to the boards within 60 days. Until then, the library will keep the filters on.
