MCC PRESIDENCY: Brooks steps in

County Executive Maggie Brooks weighed in today on the MCC presidential search debacle, saying that any board member that cannot put aside his or her personal agenda for the good of the college needs to step down. And she wants former MCC president Peter Spina to return to the job on an interim basis.

Spina contacted her, Brooks said

"I support his return," she said. "He's a person who doesn't have any political agenda. And I have encouraged the board of trustees to embrace this idea."

Calling Spina a healing force that the college needs at this time, Brooks said she has been in contact with both camps on the board.

"Make no mistake, this is not meddling on my part," she said.

Brooks said her phone has been "ringing off the hook" from people who are disturbed by the way the search process unfolded. Calling the situation "madness," Brooks said the board's failure "has left me no choice but to get involved."

For once, she does something of which I agree

Oh, please. Maggie Brooks waits until now to claim she got involved? Silence is involvement. Silence throughout this process meant she supported the Republican strings that were being pulled behind the scenes to get Bill Smith installed as president.

An intelligent leader would step in to stop the madness and should be able to cut through the BS to say that Bill Smith should remove his name from consideration because it is obviously clear that he neither has the qualifications nor the support of staff and students to be president.

Instead Brooks says nothing about what caused this mess. Instead she offers up a name for an interim president...

Bill Smith is BS in this process.

Ice, Ren Square is a bus station. There's your planning for changes in how we commute.

What do you call it when a leader steps in once failure has taken place? A poor or failed leader! I can't help but to wonder what people who elected Maggie with an overwhelming majority of the vote really think about her. The problem is that voters probably don't think much about it at all. And that is a failure on the part of the voter. First the voter puts Maggie in office. The next step is to hold her accountable for everything she does. With the MCC fiasco, Maggie stepping after it is too late speaks volumes about her lack of leadership. A true leader may have stepped in soon, before the mess boiled over to help ensure a better outcome. This lack of leadership makes me think of other fatal flaws in most governmental/political leadership. Why didn't Maggie and the Republican county majority plan ahead for $5 or $6 per gallon gasoline? Where are the dedicated and safe scooter/bicycle paths? Why is so hard for a pedestrian to cross Buffalo Road at Wegman Road in Gates? Our leaders have failed miserably in planning for the future and now the future his here. Instead of continuing on with Ren Square, how about we quickly plan for our new realitiy of very high gas prices which will finally result in huge changes in how we will need to commute to work.
