The Eastman House has contributed 219 images to the photo-sharing website Flickr. The photos are part of The Commons, a project to share the photo collections of cultural institutions worldwide. Users can browse, tag, and comment about the images. Other institutions taking part are the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, the Brooklyn Museum, Australia's Powerhouse Museum, and France's Bibliothéque Toulouse. | The Eastman House chose photos that are not under copyright protection. The second criterion was public interest. | The posting includes daguerreotypes, autochromes, and images from the turn of the 20th century made from glass-plate negatives. | "We're getting amazing feedback," says Eastman House spokesperson Dresden Engle. "People are going crazy." | By the end of the summer, the Eastman House will post works by photographer Lewis Hine, whose images document immigration at Ellis Island, child labor, and construction on the Empire State Building. | There are 400,000 photographs in the house's collection and 140,000 have been digitized. | "We're getting grants so we can share them with the world," Engle says. "Someday they will all be digitized."
