Colorful culture

Moving Beyond Racism will present "The Color of our Future: Race in the 21st Century," a book discussion on Monday, September 8, at Barnes & Noble bookstore, Pittsford Plaza, at 8 p.m.

Broad Street planning

The city's Department of Environmental Services will host a community design workshop to develop an Erie Canal Aqueduct and Broad Street Corridor Master Plan on Monday, September 8, at the Rochester Central Library, Kate Gleason Auditorium, 115 South Avenue, at 7 p.m.

Latinos fight HIV

The Ibero-American Action League and the AIDS Community Health Center will hold the Latino Community Faith-Based HIV Conference on Saturday, September 6, at 975 Joseph Avenue. More than 15 faith-based organizations will participate in an HIV-AIDS education, prevention, and free testing forum from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Free lunch and beverages will be available. Spanish will be the primary language, but everyone is invited.

Greening Penfield

The Penfield Green Initiative will hold a discussion with Doug Fox, director of Penfield planning, on Monday, September 8, at the Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Road, at 7 p.m.

Coastline cleanup

The city and county will host the 16th annual International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 20, starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help clean streams and shorelines along the Genesee River and Lake Ontario from Braddock Bay and Hamlin Beach to Webster Park. More than 47 miles of shoreline needs cleaning. Contact the area coordinator now to allow for planning: www.rochestercoastalcleanup.org.

Peace, not recruiting

Rochester Against War will hold a planning session on Saturday, September 6, at the Anti-war Crisis Center, 658 Monroe Avenue, at noon. RAW is planning a counter-recruiting presence to the Army's "Spirit of America Tour," which is coming to the Blue Cross Arena on Friday, September 12. Information: jaria9295@aol.com

Nigeria's conflict

The United Nations Association of Rochester will sponsor "Ogaja Nigeria and the Effects of the Biafra" on Wednesday, September 10, at The Baobab Cultural Center, 728 University Avenue, at 7 p.m. Sam and Cathy Spoto will share photos and stories of the economic, political, and health issues facing Nigeria. $5 donation.
