TOWLER: Biden's the one; now on to Denver

The ticket's set now, and for me, there's a bit of relief - that Obama's VP decision has been made, and that it's Joe Biden. I worry about his long-windedness, but he is so experienced, so thoughtful, and so bright that it's hard to think of someone better qualified for the position. (And it's no small matter that he's highly qualified to be president.)

Now we wait to see how much damage the Clinton camp does in Denver next week.

The Clinton folks are wearing me out. Some of them, obviously, wouldn't have voted for any Democrat except Clinton. They're Reagan Democrats, Ted Van Dyk notes in the Wall Street Journal this morning ("How the Election of 1968 Reshaped the Democratic Party"). Philosophically, they're much more McCain's people than Obama's.

But many, many Clinton supporters are solid, moderate-to-liberal Democrats. Their obsession over Clinton is curious and dangerous. They're still insisting that Obama hasn't given Clinton the respect she deserves (as if her harsh criticism of him during the campaign had no impact). And most curious of all, they're insisting that Obama should do more to help Clinton pay off her campaign debt.

The Clintons have plenty of money of their own. They're adults, and they took on the campaign debt knowingly. And - as it's been widely reported - the Clinton campaign squandered a lot of its money in the early days of the campaign on lavish quarters and food. The supporters ought to be aiming their ire at the Clinton money-wasters, not at Obama.

Clinton supporters have lost sight of what this election is about. They've decided it's about them and their candidate, not the future of the country. And if they keep this up, they'll do more damage than Ralph Nader did in the 2000 presidential election.
