What a shock the 26th Congressional District Democratic primary turned out to be.
Everybody thought the race was between Jon Powers and Jack Davis. No one gave Alice Kryzan a shot.
But, as one Democratic insider put it, Kryzan "ducked and let the mud hit the other guy."
If Kryzan's victory seems like a minor upset, think again. This race was being watched by Democrats and Republicans from across the country. The seat is a top priority for both parties.
The big question now is whether Dems will line up behind Kryzan. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which backed Powers, issued a tepid statement of congratulations to Kryzan. But it did not say whether it would give her campaign any support.
Powers may have been knocked off the Democratic line, but he still has the Working Families Party endorsement. He could continue his campaign or he could step back and support Kryzan's bid. A lot of Dems are waiting to see what step he takes next.
There's a tough battle ahead for Kryzan. Christopher Lee, the Republican candidate, has his party standing firmly behind him. In the Republican-leaning 26th, that will mean a lot.
For now, Davis is out of the equation. The State Board of Elections rejected his petitions to create his own party. And the Independence Party is backing Anthony Fumerelle, though Davis tried to buy his way into that endorsement.

The people protesting Sarah Palin looked like idiots. She's on a book tour, not a political...

I could see this coming a mile away. I'm not a Democrat, but it was an easy call. Neither Powers nor Davis came to the table with clean hands. Kryzan pointed out their ridiculous mudslinging in one very effective ad, and that was enough for most voters to realize there was an alternative. Rick Dollinger should take note. People are sick of childish accusatory ads and want to hear a candidates plans and positions, not petty name calling.

Unfortunately for Democrats in the 26th, Alice Kryzan does NOT embrace the important Democratic ideals--like equal rights for gay citizens.

Sunday Sept. 21st at noon I stood on a traffic filled Rochester street corner with the sign "Alice'08 for Congress" from www.Kryzanforcongress.org. Not surprisingly Alice Kryzan is a new face to us.
I've met and talked with Powers and Davis face -to- face and think we now have a real alternative. We are now happy to support Alice Kryzan, but we need to make it clear that she is a clear alternative to the 'boys with money' who have ruled our mostly rural 26th CD. One left to get rich as a lobbyist for the drug industry writing of the senior citizen drug disaster Medicare law.
Lee inherited his money, apparently, then shipped WNY jobs to China and sold his company to run for Congress. Kryzan is bright woman with energy and skills new to machine politics has to do a better job for the people of the 26th CD.
The 26th District Congressional candidates were invited to speak at the SUNY Geneseo Student Union Ballroom on Wednesday, Oct. 1st at 7 PM. Kryzan should be there. I intend to be there to meet her in person.
