MOULE: A 26th District shocker

By Jeremy Moule on September 10, 2008

What a shock the 26th Congressional District Democratic primary turned out to be.

Everybody thought the race was between Jon Powers and Jack Davis. No one gave Alice Kryzan a shot.

But, as one Democratic insider put it, Kryzan "ducked and let the mud hit the other guy."

If Kryzan's victory seems like a minor upset, think again. This race was being watched by Democrats and Republicans from across the country. The seat is a top priority for both parties.

The big question now is whether Dems will line up behind Kryzan. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which backed Powers, issued a tepid statement of congratulations to Kryzan. But it did not say whether it would give her campaign any support.

Powers may have been knocked off the Democratic line, but he still has the Working Families Party endorsement. He could continue his campaign or he could step back and support Kryzan's bid. A lot of Dems are waiting to see what step he takes next.

There's a tough battle ahead for Kryzan. Christopher Lee, the Republican candidate, has his party standing firmly behind him. In the Republican-leaning 26th, that will mean a lot.

For now, Davis is out of the equation. The State Board of Elections rejected his petitions to create his own party. And the Independence Party is backing Anthony Fumerelle, though Davis tried to buy his way into that endorsement.
