President Obama plans to announce tomorrow the recipients of $8 billion in federal funding for high-speed rail, says Congress member Louise Slaughter. And it sounds like New York will be getting a chunk of that money.
Slaughter had this to say in a statement just released by her office: "High-speed rail moves workers quickly and will generate improved productivity in a wide sector of the economy. I appreciate especially the strong support that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood showed to New York's ‘Empire Corridor,' which is slated to receive a sizeable investment in rail funds for many shovel-ready track projects."
So Slaughter confirms that the state will get some money. The question is, how much? We'll find out tomorrow.

An FYI for readers: Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's office just sent out an e-mail saying that New York's Empire Corridor will get $151 million. Some of that money is marked for improvements to Rochester's train station.

Shall we nickname this high speed rail "The Breeze" or give it the more formal "Spirit of Ontario?"

I just rode Amtrak from Rochester to Philly this past week and it sure beat the heck out of driving. I would say that it's better than flying, but it just takes so darn long.
Having a true high speed train (not this Acela garbage) would enable people with NYC incomes to live in Upstate NY and commute. The economic effect to Upstate would be massive.

i just took the train from Utica to Croton-Harmon they should use the money to create a high speed train and i think the train should be called Turboliner or the Acela Turboliner to bring back momories of the Turbo train (Acela Turboliner) because then northeast has the Acela simalar trains simalar tittles but routing for Turboliner.
