Clifford on fire

Molly Clifford attended City Council committee hearings yesterday afternoon - her first appearance since her controversial appointment as director of fire administration. Clifford was impressive: her answers to Council's questions were immediate, intelligent, and well-informed - she's obviously done her homework. It was the first time a woman represented the fire department before Council, and Clifford got a round of applause for it. I caught up with Clifford in the elevator after the meeting; she was on her way to fire class. "It's hard! It's hard!" she said, unsolicited. "I'm 44 years old!"
