When Governor David Paterson announced this afternoon that he's dropping his election bid, he hit on a lot of the themes that he covered when he announced his candidacy last week.
He mentioned accomplishments like Rockefeller Drug Law reforms and cutting spending to balance difficult budgets. But in the end, he said, he's being realistic about politics.
"There are times in politics where you have to know not to strive for service but to step back," he said.
He kicked off his election campaign last weekend, including a stop in Rochester. But as he announced today that he was dropping his bid, he framed it as a decision to fully devote himself to state business, which he said he wouldn't be able to do if he had to campaign.
He said he has 308 days left in his term, and that he plans to serve each of them "fighting for the people of New York.

Boy oh boy...New York elected officials are in a very sad state of chaos. Paterson came into office as a sitting duck. Now that he isn't running for re-election, he's a lame duck. We have a totally useless state legislature and worst of all Al Haig is dead. If Al was still around, he could as least say he was in charge :)
