It's come down to the wire for the Democrats to get a health care bill passed.
Democrats are saying they will have a bill in front of the president before Easter, and Obama is pushing his party to come together soon. Their only option at this point, apparently, is to go the reconciliation route, and even that doesn't look promising.
The likelihood of Democrats getting a bill passed through reconciliation was the main topic on the Sunday morning news shows.
In a sharp exchange on NBC's "Meet the Press" between Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and EJ Dionne, political columnist at the Washington Post, Hatch's ability to brush off the gravity of health care reform was remarkable.
You would never know, listening to him, that 45 million Americans have no health insurance.
And as the exchange between Dionne and Hatch continued, things got heated.
Hatch: "The use of reconciliation to jam through this legislation against the will of the American people would be unprecedented in scope. And the havoc wrought would threaten our system of checks and balances...."
Dionne: "I find it astonishing that so many Republicans who, when President Bush surged troops into Iraq against the polls, said ‘This is a courageous act,' and when President Obama tries to push a health-care bill against the polls, this is a terrible thing."
Dionne later referred to a New York Times article that examined how often reconciliation has been used.
Surprise! Surprise! Republicans have used it more than Democrats. And guess what?
The world didn't come to an end.
