He may be our little curiosity, but Eric Massa's story has quickly become high entertainment in the media. And I admit it: I can't stop reading the stuff.
He's been dominating the news on Politico. He's in the Times. The Washington Post. The Guardian in the UK.
And today's there's this on The Daily Beast: "As departing Rep. Eric Massa preps for an appearance on Glenn Beck, Democratic consultants say he's assured his legacy in US politics - as a lunatic."
The Beast quotes Democratic media consultant Jimmy Siegel saying that Massa's behavior is "somewhat lacking as a survival strategy. However, as a strategy to get himself on a reality show where 10 people are stuck in a house, it will work well for him."
Also on The Beast, NYU professor Mitchell Moss, commenting on Massa's description of his naked shower encounter with Rahm Emanuel: "You can't beat this. We have now come to a point in our culture where the House of Representatives has more skin than the Academy Awards."
Some Beast sources offered a more serious take: that Massa had always been "duplicitous at best," playing the health-care issue two ways, posing as a champion of single-payer to win liberal votes, and conniving to kill reform to look like a champion to the conservatives in his district.
And this just in: The Washington Post has dropped another shoe, reporting that Massa has been under investigation by the House ethics committee for "allegations that he groped multiple male staffers working in his office." The Post says it is basing its story on "three sources familiar with the probe" and that the allegations date back as much as a year.
Next drama: will Glenn Beck and Larry King still have Massa on their shows today?
