UPDATE: The New York Times' reporters say Paterson's claim isn't true, that they didn't learn about it from him.

According to CNN, Governor David Paterson now says he himself "was the person who informed the press that he interceded in an assault case involving his aide, David Johnson." The media coverage led to the current ethics investigation.
CNN says Paterson made the comment this morning during a program on New York's WOR radio.
As CNN notes, today's comment "contradicts earlier remarks from Paterson that the story was based on un-sourced claims and information from unnamed sources."
