Anti-Morelle robocall

An anti-Joe Morelle robocall is making the rounds [see Morelle's response below]. Members of City Council mentioned the call at a meeting last night, and Council member Carolee Conklin played the recording for a City Newspaper writer.

"Joe Morelle raised our taxes and increased our fees 37 times. That's over $11 billion out of taxpayers' pockets," goes the script, read by a peppy young woman. "Now he wants us to believe he's fighting for lower taxes in Albany? Give me a break. Joe Morelle can't help solve the problem; he's part of the problem." (An audio recording of the call is at right.)

The call ends after the woman gives the phone number to Morelle's office.

The woman does not identify herself or who she's calling for. It's clear who Conklin and some other Council members blame: unions associated with the city school district. That makes sense, given Morelle's support of mayoral control and his position as leader of the local party. Morelle, like all state legislators, is also up for election this year.

Conklin says the robocall is not effective because it doesn't mention specific issues; anything for people to act upon.

"It doesn't make any sense at all," she says. "People are going to hear it and say, ‘Huh?'"

MORELLE'S RESPONSE [Taken from his Twitter feed at 4:50 p.m.]

"In the past few days you may have received an anonymous call lying about my record on taxes and state spending. The fact is I voted against last year's State budget specifically because it raised taxes and spent too much. And again this year, I am in Albany fighting hard to ensure there are no tax increases in the budget and instead it provides a plan for the Upstate economy to recover and thrive."

Perhaps it's time for Conklin to look into another career also. Or better yet, since Conklin and her crew on City Council are about as effective as the school board, maybe we should just let the mayor appoint City Council as well. Why not? Who needs that silly vote anyway?

Look: Morelle clearly is damaging our community and is ruining the Democratic party locally. We all know this. He needs to go. Plus, let's be real: City Council can barely take care its current roster of business as it is. Do we seriously think Conklin and crew can really take on education in addition to dealing with a few other small problems like oh, say, poverty, no jobs, our abysmal downtown, high taxes, etc., etc. Sorry Ms. Conklin, no offense, but you are not that smart or capable. Ms. Conklin, we know what action we need to take: get rid of ineffective incumbents. Thanks for your service, but bye-bye.

The fact that Carolee Conklin and some other City Council members would blame an anonymous anti-Joe Morelle robo-call on city school district unions without first having the courtesy of asking us if we were involved is disheartening. The four unions that represent over 6,000 employees in the Rochester City School District had no knowledge of the robo-call until hearing of it in the news. The robo-call does not address the issue of mayoral control, which has been our central disagreement with Joe Morelle, nor does it address the manner in which his divisive leadership style is creating havoc within the Democratic Party. The fact that city school district unions are being blamed for everything under the sun is further evidence that Morelle should step down so that someone else can step up and unify the party.

It is way past due for Joe Morelle to leave his position as MCDC Chairman...way, way past due.
