Senate becomes bipartisan for jobs bill

There's enough tension and bad stuff in the news at the moment, so it's a relief to have some good news. And today there really is some:

The Senate has passed a bill giving tax breaks to businesses who hire the unemployed and providing money for public construction projects.

That's good news in itself, but just as important: it passed on a bipartisan vote. Eleven Republicans signed on.

Yesterday, I cited David Brooks' column in the New York Times on the danger of the increasing divisiveness and bitterness in the Senate. Voting for jobs is a popular stand to take, obviously, but Republicans seem determined to vote against anything Democrats are for. The jobs vote offers a bit of hope, even if its bipartisanship included only 11 people.

The brave 11: Lamar Alexander, Tennessee; Christopher Bond, Missouri; Scott Brown, Massachusetts; Richard Burr, North Carolina; Thad Cochran, Mississippi; Susan Collins, Maine; James Inhofe, Oklahoma; George LeMieux, Florida;

Lisa Murkowski, Alaska; Olympia Snowe, Maine; and George Voinovich, Ohio.
