Watching the Massa meltdown

Like many liberals, I've been impressed with Eric Massa. I was glad voters in his district sent him to Congress two years ago.

And I realize it would be hard for a shrinking violet to be elected to anything.

But this has gotten too weird for my comfort.

Massa says he's been the one Democrat in Congress preventing the passage of health-care reform. He had first said he wasn't seeking re-election because he's had a cancer scare and his doctors told him to slow down. Now he says powerful Democrats have forced him out.

And for someone trying to deflect charges of sexual harassment, he has headed down a peculiar path, repeatedly bringing the storyline back to sex. On his very own radio program, he talked about tossing a sexual remark at a staff member - all in good fun, of course - and tousling the staff member's hair. Relating an incident in a Congressional shower room in which White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel reamed him out, Massa made a point of saying that both he and Emmanuel were naked. He related an incident from his Navy career: walking into his quarters and finding his roommate, as he put it, "remembering his wife," and asking the roommate if he needed any help.

It was a flip, serviceman's remark, Massa said, and he then simply went to his own bunk and went to sleep.

That's entirely believable. But why in heaven's name bring it up? Why keep focusing on sex?

Massa, whose anger seems to have gotten the best of him, will be on Glenn Beck's Fox News program today at 5, and on Larry King tonight at 9. Presumably, he plans to stick it to the Democrats on both shows. I assume he thinks he'll look like a hero. But somebody ought to tell him the truth.
