TRANSIT CENTER: Where's the legislation?

The packet of legislation that City Council will consider this month contains a notable omission: there is nothing on the proposed Mortimer Street transit center.

You'll remember that Council took a mostly ceremonial vote last month to support the controversial center. That passed 8-1, with Council member Carolee Conklin opposed.

We've been repeatedly told by city officials that the "real" vote would come in June; when Council would vote to abandon Mortimer so RGRTA can build the center.

So, what gives?

In a telephone call this morning, Council Vice President Elaine Spaull said she doesn't know why the legislation isn't there. She also said that some Council member would be meeting with City Corporation Counsel Tom Richards soon and that she'd find out what happened.

Keep in mind that although the legislation doesn't appear in the packet, it is possible that it could be added anytime leading up to the June 15 City Council meeting.

Although the May vote passed, several Council members had questions about the center, mostly centered on location and the process of bringing the issue to a vote. A few Council members threatened to vote "no" in June if their questions weren't adequately addressed by then.

Matt Haag, one of the members of Council who said he'd change his vote, wants RGRTA to help foot the bill for security at the center. RGRTA's current plan calls for an RPD facility to be located nearby. Haag said recently that he hadn't decided how he'd vote on abandoning Mortimer Street, but that the security issue is as close to a deal breaker as it gets.
