It does no good to complain, but still... attention must be paid when we take yet another step forward in this misguided war.
Yesterday the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved spending another $58.8 billion on the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, much of it for Afghanistan.
The vote was 308 in favor, 114 opposed; 10 representatives didn't cast a vote.
That 114 opposed is significant, though, demonstrating that some members of Congress - particularly Democrats - are growing increasingly upset with the war in Afghanistan.
Rochester's Louise Slaughter and Dan Maffei both voted against the funding. Chris Lee voted for it.
Also significant: 12 of the 114 opponents of the funding were Republicans.
You can see how all of the Representatives voted here. (The summary of the bill refers to funding disaster relief and summer jobs and "other purposes" but this was indeed the war funding.)
The war funding wasn't the only significant vote in the House yesterday. A resolution to remove US troops from Pakistan, sponsored by Dennis Kucinich, was heavily defeated: 372 to 38, with 18 not voting and four voting "present." Thirty-two Democrats - including Dan Maffei - and six Republicans voted with Kucinich. Louise Slaughter's was one of the four "present votes.

Thank you to Louise Slaughter, Dan Maffei and Dennis Kucinich.
In January 2009, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan became Obama's wars. Those who helped to elected President Obama hoped he would change the course of the wars by ending them. How it seems Obama will continue the wars for a while. That is not the change I voted for.
