My God. Don't you just want to shake these people?
Lump me in with those - Palin, Lazio, Gingrich - opposed to an Islamic cultural center two blocks from the former site of the World Trade Center in New York City.
I want a mosque. And I want it at Ground Zero. (Close your mouth.)
Most of us know that the past isn't as soft or as simple as we remember it. We romanticize, file down the sharp edges, air out that homer a few more feet, give the old prom date less acne and more hair.
When conservatives talk about going back to traditional values, I often wonder how far back they want to go. How about the Victorian era, when marriage was little more than a business arrangement? Didn't I read that prostitutes marched behind the troops in the Civil War? And we all know now what Thomas Jefferson was up to. Wink, wink.
Seems to me the past they're talking about is a single day that may or may not have existed on an episode of "Father Knows Best."
So as long as we're free to invent America, mine has a mosque at Ground Zero. The biggest one we can build. It's an F.U. to the crazies who attacked us on 9/11: to hell with you; you're not going to bomb us into that dark place in ourselves; into intolerance, into fear, into ignorance. We won't let you. We won't let you turn us into what you accuse us of being.

Thought this would be of interest to readers.
Since September 2001 I have maintained a free and confidential "9/11 list-serv".
The "9/11 list-serv" distributes daily e-mails containing newspaper articles and other relevant information re: 9/11 issues of interest to 9/11 families, 9/11 organizations and interested individuals.
The 9/11 List-serv archives can be accessed at groups.google.com/group/911-list-serv

Hatred and prejudice is not the issue here. These same people already operate a mosque probably less than mile from ground zero and no one cares. Putting one around the corner, however, in a bldng damaged in the attacks is an act of provacation. It is, or comea off as, as the author puts it here, a big "f.u."It is hurtful and unnecessary. Also; the Islamic terrorists did not attack because they see us, as we define it, as evil and full of hate. They attacked us because they see our freedoms and tolerance and plaurism as evil and demanding their judgment. As the 9/11 mastermind khalid s mohammed said, we deserve to die as infidels. And our support for the "filthy Jew." 9/11 is not the place to get cute and clever. Innocent people died there, brutally. The writer could show a little more maturity.

Michael; good points, but you fail to recognize that you are associating anyone of the Muslim faith in the same lines as the 9/11 terrorists.
If we want to paint the world that way then I'm a shameful Christian because of what my fellow believers have done in the guise of my religion.
Those who died in the attacks were across MANY religions. If this Muslim center is nudged down then we should expect any Christian places of worship near 9/11 to also face resistance from those who feel we are favoring one faith over another.
We as Americans need to show some maturity and adhere to our country's founding principals and NOT get bogged down in hateful, bigotry driven ideals that opportunistic politicians love to push to us "Fixing America"

Recently, the Baltimore Sun reported “Expressions of religious bigotry on the rise”; such expressions are quite evident in the comments above. This thinly veiled religious intolerance is either a form of mental illness such as xenophobia or outright religious bigotry based upon ignorance; in either case, it is “fear” masquerading as intelligent commentary.
As an American and as a Christian, I am shamed by such ignorant remarks and offer my “regrets” to any who may have been offended. Hopefully, the “Christian” writers above will regain their spiritual centers (and their senses) and reassess their untenable position.
