More reports about anti-Muslim fervor:

  • From AP, via TalkingPointsMemo: In Seattle, a man has been arrested for attacking a man wearing a turban. The attacker, who yelled "You're not even American, you're al Qaeda. Go back to your country," has been charged with assault and malicious harassment, which AP says is a hate-crime charge.
  • From the Democrat and Chronicle: Five Orleans County teenagers are accused of disrupting a religious service at a mosque last night, honking their car horn and shouting obscenities. One of them has also been charged with firing a shotgun near the mosque on Friday.
  • On Saturday, construction equipment at a mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was burned, and the Times is reporting that yesterday, as some members of the mosque were surveying the damage, gunshots were fired nearby.
  • Newsweek is reporting that more than half of the Republicans surveyed in a recent poll "think it's ‘definitely true' or ‘probably true' that Obama ‘sympathizes with the goals of fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world.'"
  • The Times notes that media around the world are covering the anti-Muslim fervor in the US.

The irony is that America was initially colonized by people seeking to escape from religious persecution!

What should we expect, with Newtie and Sarah and Rush and Hannity fomenting ant-Muslim intolerance day after day? In some ways, it's remarkable that there have been so few incidents, given the virtually non-stop provocation spewing from most Republicans. Only Sen Hatch refused to go along. It's hard to know what's worse -- do they really believe what they're saying, or is it just a cynical base-rousing ploy in a campaign year? Either way, the intolerants are doing major damage to the USA.
