ELECTION 2008: The Pennsylvania primary and the message of "change"

Tomorrow's Democratic primary in Pennsylvania may give us a good insight into whether voters are still embracing Barack Obama's message of change.

Cutthroat politics has turned off many voters, but Hillary Clinton doesn't seem to care. And it's been encouraging to see that the more she lashes out, Advertisementthe more her support drops. The latest polls still show her winning in Pennsylvania, but by just over 5 percent - way down from a few weeks ago.

The Democrats' campaign has spurred new interest in politics, and that's clearly due to Obama. Since January, Politico.com is reporting, more than 200,000 new voters have registered for the Pennsylvania primary, "the vast majority of whom signed up as Democrats." In addition, says Politico, "more than 178,000 voters have changed their party status since January - and the Democrats have captured 92 percent of those voters."

That Clinton doesn't recognize the significance of that interest is dismaying. If she is elected, Clinton will undoubtedly adopt policies vastly different from the Bush administration's, and vastly better. But her behavior during the campaign - and the behavior of her husband and other supporters - shows that she doesn't understand what Obama means when he talks about change. Or she doesn't realize the importance of what he's saying. Either way, it's an indication that if she's elected, we've lost a chance for real reform in politics.
