Last night's Rick Dollinger-Joe Robach debate at Aenon Baptist Church went down about as expected - with no Joe Robach.
Dollinger got plenty of questions from the audience and wound up, twice, debating members of the audience. And in a couple of instances, people in the audience wound up debating - or shouting down - each other.
Dollinger, a Democrat, is running against the Republican incumbent Robach for the 56th District state Senate seat. Dollinger had challenged Robach to a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate, but Robach declined.
During last night's forum - the term "debate" was scrapped once it was clear it wouldn't be a two-candidate affair - Dollinger laid out his positions. To combat violence, he said, the focus should include education. Key to that, he said, is boosting funding for city schools. Young people are "picking up guns because they've dropped their books," he said.
Dollinger also said he wants the Rockefeller drug laws abolished, and he wants more emphasis on addiction treatment for drug offenders whose only crimes are drug offenses.
Robach's absence at the forum didn't mean smooth sailing for Dollinger. Two Monroe County employees in the audience put him on the defensive. With all the "ills" of the city, asked Kevan Sheppard, the first deputy clerk for the County Legislature, "Isn't the city run by Democrats?"
Dollinger tried to deflect that question by saying that Republicans have run the State Senate for 30 years and are responsible for many of New York's problems.
There was no real back and forth between Dollinger and his critics. Instead, Dollinger supporters sometimes shouted down the critics. "If it's going to be this way," responded Ron House (who works in the county's human-resources department), "maybe that's why your opponent isn't here," and stormed out of the room.
While it may be simplistic to suggest that the problem at East High is the result of the fact...
Before Hillary Clinton can become Secretary of State, the Obama administration will certainly...
Paterson won't do it. Downstate has too much power and influence and too many Dems so they will...
Schumer is a hypocrite. If deficit spending is wrong when Republicans do it, then it's wrong...
I'd like to see more discussion (rationally only) regarding the idea that "gay is a lifestyle"....

I'm a Democrat and I am NOT supporting Rick Dollinger. I'm much more in favor of working with Republican Joe Robach because working with him sends a better message than simply parading out a candidate to run against him. Of course, Rick Dollinger has made some enemies and I know of many other Democrats who are just sick and tired of him. We thought we saw the last of him when he settled into his dream job of being a judge. Now he's back as the next in line to try to unseat Robach. I call that a waste of campaign funds.

I am a Democrat as well, not in the Dollinger/Robach district, and interested in politics. I know Joe Robach and have never known him to back away from anything. There could be a very good reason Robach was not there. Anything from family emergency to scheduling conflict. I once wrote to my congressman and asked why he missed an important vote. I received a copy of my congressman's mother's obituary in the mail. How stupid did I feel for jumping to conclusions?? About as stupid as I could have possibly felt.

I am a Democrat and I will most certainly vote for Rick Dollinger. Perhaps he will spend time in Albany, I canceled my subscription to The Greece Post as I was tired of seeing Joe Robach on every other page here in Rochester along with a couple of other politicians . The other thing was his having to be politicing (Shaking hands etc) at every possible event, ball games, Aquinas Mission Bout in the ring etc. I have been around long enough to have lived in Greece when his father served and I admired himit was it severed us well, if only his son was more like him.

Joe Robach is part of Monroe County's problems not solutions. While he will appear at virtually anything for face time he is never around for the issues just as he did not appear for this debate. Where was he in protecting our schools when the FAIR plan came into place? Not a peep out of him. Where has he been for the issues at Braddocks Bay and dredging a wildlife preserve while property values fall? Not a peep out of him. Where is he in condemnation of Christa Construction in botching work on schools while accepting contributions from same? Not a peep out of him. Where is he when the Greece tax assessor makes a deal with people at Kodak resulting in a big tax debacle and then some. Not a peep out of him. Certain functions he will attend and leave before he is asked to comment on questions.
Robach rode the waves of his father's legacy in the town. He likes to appear at anything/everything. Now it's not his job to deal with say the FAIR plan, to deal with Christa's deals with our schools, Braddocks Bay and more. BUT if one wishes to call oneself a bastion of the community and a leader of the people and wishes to appear at countless functions in the community as a leader for the people then he most certainly should "step up to the plate" when issues such as the above and indeed many more confront the community. Instead, he is just completely absent.
Towards that end Rick Dollinger will not be absent. He has never been absent from Monroe County. He is FAR more in touch with the people as a former legislator, former senator, former Judge and more. He is not riding a legacy name and he will step up to bat for the people, not just here but Western NY.
Ask Robach sometime why he switched parties from Dem to GOP. Ask him why he won't debate face to face. I already know why. He switched parties because thats where his best interests lay. He won't debate as he knows WHO he'd be debating. Rick Dollinger is not just a guy that comes in off the street and says, "Lets have a debate". He was a Judge, he is an attorney, he is knowledgable, knows his facts, and is skilled in presenting them. Robach does not wish to debate as he knows that he cannot possibly stand toe to toe with Dollinger and have the slightest chance at coming away from a debate without being exposed for exactly what he is. It would be clearly shown to the community with no area for doubt why Dollinger is the better choice. So politically it's best to avoid such a debate.
With that said, you the reader of this might not like Rick Dollinger the person as he is not "Mr. Personality" like Robach is. But we the people do not need "Mr. Personality" representing our interests. We need someone who is skilled, someone who knows how to deal with the Senate, attack, defend, get things done for us. Someone who's not scared to expose impropriety and work to effect true change not more of the same. I dont need a Senator who appears at my kids Boy Scout Troop to convince me that he's a good representative of my communities interests. I need someone in Albany to make sure that nepotism is not squandering our money and values. I need someone who is not scared to fight Rep's or Dem's when it comes to securing my kids future. I need someone who will champion fighting against those that simply take our futures from us. Rick Dollinger has stepped up to the plate for people of this State each and EVERY time he has been asked to. He is EXACTLY what we need in Albany right now. In fact, we need about 100 more just like him.
