ENVIRONMENT: Fluorescents are less harmful than alternatives

In response to Laurie Kash's letter, 'Fluorescents' Problems': If you're truly worried about mercury in the environment, use, rather than forsake, compact fluorescent bulbs.

Yes, they do contain some mercury. However, the amount of mercury released into the environment by their use and disposal is miniscule compared to the amount released in the burning of fossil fuels to power an equivalent amount of incandescent lighting.

If you really want to save energy and the environment, do the research, learn the facts - and then use a CFL. (And then shut the damn thing off when you leave the room!)
