ABORTION RIGHTS: Crossed's "facts" aren't facts

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts." That was the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan's retort whenever someone buttressed their arguments about an issue with facts that weren't really facts, but untruths.

I am reminded of Moynihan's words every time I hear Carol Crossed, the Democrats for Life gal, or her daughter Jessica Shanahan of New Yorkers for Parental Rights, speak about the Reproductive Health Act, proposed legislation that would overhaul the state's antiquated abortion laws.

Crossed and Shanahan are of the opinion that the bill shouldn't be passed because they both oppose abortion. That's fine; they're entitled.

What is not okay are the spurious "facts" the two women put forth to bolster their opinion.

Among other things, Crossed and Shanahan claim that if the bill is passed, dentists and podiatrists will begin performing abortions. As Jeremy Moule pointed out in "Look, Ma, No Abortions" (April 23), there's not a grain of truth in that assertion; the facts are bogus.

It's long past time for the fibbing to stop.
