RIGHTS: You can volunteer for jury duty

on June 2, 2009

I was especially drawn to Jeremy Moule's piece, "Everybody into the Jury Pool" (May 6), as I was scheduled to report for jury duty on May 12. When I got to the Hall of Justice, I was handed the Petit Juror's Handbook, published by the New York State Unified Court System. On Page 2, the booklet notes: "Potential jurors are randomly selected from lists of registered voters, holders of drivers' licenses or ID's issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles, New York State income tax files, recipients of unemployment insurance or family assistance, and from volunteers" (my emphasis added).

If any segment of the community feels that it is not well represented in the jury pool, it would seem to be relatively simple and easy for interested community leaders to encourage people from that segment to volunteer.

Jury duty is a privilege. Every citizen should avail themselves of the opportunity to serve.
