Thank you for the incisive analysis in "Shaping the Details in Duffy's School Plan" and convincing recommendations for mayoral control (Urban Journal, January 20).
I look forward to news and perhaps editorial comments on a smaller, but controversial, subject: ArtWalk 2. Since a news item in the Democrat and Chronicle two days before Christmas, including the announcement of a public meeting on January 4, when one of the two chosen artists would meet with community residents and the ArtWalk 2 design team, nothing further has been reported.
Concern that "celebrity artists" would overlook local traditions was understandable, considering the two artists' proposals. A giant rotating, high-resolution video screen atop a 32-by-32-foot plaza proposed by one artist sounded more like a moving billboard than a sculpture. The other artist proposed a ball of energy, with a glow to dominate the North Goodman and College Avenue intersection. Both installations seem out of synch with the ecological, energy-saving, going-green concerns of Rochester.
We look forward to hearing that the artists, Adam Frank from Brooklyn and Cliff Garten of Venice, California, have become more in-tune with our area.
