Dissolution: we're all talking about it. Let's think about what it might mean to Brockport; specifically, what it would mean to the people who live here. I believe the core group of people pushing for this are the same people who've been working to control Brockport for many years.
Consider what dissolution would mean to a few landlords. Brockport is their "cash cow." For decades, homes have been turned into money-making machines, giving a few people many profits with little risk. Now that the village is flooded with rentals and college students have other options, what's a landlord to do?
The demise of the village will almost certainly make it easier for landlords to free themselves from zoning, occupancy, code enforcement, and parking restrictions. No more limits on paved yards, the number of people crammed into rentals, or the conditions of the properties themselves. Is there any argument that while Brockport has many nice rentals, it also has more in terrible condition - properties that degrade their neighborhoods, encourage family flight, and force the rest of us to shoulder their decreased tax payments?
Our police department would cease to exist if dissolution became a reality. Nobody, for any price, could take the place of our police force. They maintain a quality of life we must have to survive as a livable community. Disruptive parties, fights, public intoxication, drug activities, and such are dealt with by our police force as priorities, not something at the bottom of a "to do" list. I speak from experience, having lived next to a "party house" for years.
We need our police force. Less than a dollar a day is a small price to pay for what we receive in police services.
Dissolution isn't a solution. Our debts won't go away. Our need for services won't go away. Crime won't go away. What we need is a more affordable, financially sound village, which is what a majority of our elected Board of Trustees is working on right now. They're committed to real solutions and necessary changes. Budget cuts have already been made. Trustees Hunsinger, Legg, and Blair are donating their salaries back to the village. Do you think Sweden officials will work long hours without pay to solve our problems and serve our best interests?
I believe we can and will solve our own problems, chart our own future, and improve our village, unless a small group of single-minded people succeed in wiping Brockport off the map forever.

So if the village is dissolved, Brockport zoning laws and code enforcement will just about cease to exist? I seriously doubt it. Townships also have code officers and zoning boards. The township may even do a betteer job at policing landlords. This sounds like a person with an agenda promoting their agenda with scare tactics.
So dissolving the village police dept and letting the sheriff's dept handle the policing would result in anarchy in Brockport? More scare tactics! Residents like this deserve an 18% tax increase to keep their village. Wake up! You don't need a village government and village departments to keep your community safe and enjoyable. Maybe with all the tax savings from dissolving the village, property owners can afford to put some money back into their property.
Just for the record, I don't reside (or never have) nor do I own property in Brockport.

Certain facts cannot be disputed. The "trustees" of the Brockport board have squandered a 5 million dollar tax surplus since 2001 and have almost no money now. We used to have 2 spring cleanup events per year. This year, we will have NONE. We pay almost exactly TRIPLE the taxes of Town of Sweden residents, who incidentally DO have Spring cleanup service.
What do we get for those taxes?
Police service? Yes, like when they come and threaten you for putting a yard sale sign up on a telephone pole, as they have nothing better to do with their time.
Code Enforcement Officers banging on your door and standing there in shorts and flip flops to harrass you at dinner time before zipping off in their taxpayer funded "company car".
Village Government never did anything except tax, harrass, and cut services during my 23 year stint in this wonderful community. I'd gladly pay more tax for 2 years if it will get rid of the good old boy system they have in place now.

This is, by far, the most brain-dead idea I have ever heard. After having lived in Brockport for more than 7 years, I can't believe this is even being considered - even by small cadre of nutcases that are dotted across the landscape.
The quality of life in Brockport is what it is because there is a stable entity keeping it desirable. If this actually goes through, I hope the slumlords get what every other community whose done this gets.
Google: "East St. Louis" for the answer.
Good golly, people are so stupid!
