In response to the letter "Will the GOP finally get it?" (The Mail, January 27): Writer Jim Delaney attempts to tear down liberalism while extolling the virtues of the right wing. Contrary to what he says, conservative Republicanism is a complete and utter failure. The financial crisis this country is facing - the worst since the Great Depression, we are told - is a direct result of 30 years of Republican greed and recklessness. Their policies of deregulation and massive tax cuts for the wealthy, while dismantling the middle class, have decimated our economy.
Delaney gushes over the so-called "Tea Baggers," painting them as average "Joes and Jills," when in reality they are nothing more than the 22 percent who thought George W. Bush was a good president and who were cheering Sarah Palin on. The Tea Baggers are a fabrication of corporate lobbyists and the right-wing media whose avatar is the white woman sobbing at a town hall meeting last summer, saying "I want my country back."
Say what you will about liberals, but remember: it is conservatives who have historically been on the wrong side of every thing we take for granted in today's America. When Americans fought for decent, safe working conditions and a living wage, conservatives sided with corporate bosses. When women were seeking the right to vote, to have a say in their own destiny, conservatives sought to deny them. When black Americans refused to accept second-class citizenship, conservatives fought them tooth and nail. In the struggle for the most basic civil rights that heterosexuals take for granted, gay and lesbian Americans are faced with incredibly hate-filled, right-wing fear mongering.
Our new president was elected on the promise of making health care more affordable and available to all Americans, but conservatives, true to form, are siding with the health insurance industry and not the average Joes and Jills they claim to represent.
Soon after Mr. Obama was elected president, the conservative right wing announced that they would do everything in their power to assure his failure. How is this not "parochial self interest"? How does this help put Americans back to work, or help them afford their mortgage payments? How does this reassure Americans that they won't need to choose between health care and groceries?
I urge all decent, hard-working Americans to ignore the attempted defamation of our good president and his supporters by the vapid, egomaniacal, self-serving conservative right and to stand with Mr. Obama in helping to rebuild our nation.
This is in the best interest of ALL Americans.
This is our time.
