DEVELOPMENT: Erie Harbor is just ugly

My immediate reaction to the picture of the Erie Harbor design (August 18) was "East Berlin, Soviet-built housing, 1963." My second response was that these buildings looked like cells made of concrete slabs with no attempt at esthetics whatsoever. They are UGLY, to say the least, and a brick facing will not be able to conceal that fact. No way could they ever have a "residential feel."

Where is the sensitivity of the developers and the South Wedge Planning Committee to the future residents who would want to take pride in their home but can't because these blocks are worthy only of ridicule and disdain? What is this statement, "South Wedge is known for its mix of eclectic architecture," supposed to convey - that these cells are acceptable in the mix?

My hope is that someone with power sees this project for the awful thing it is and stops it from being built. It seems at this point, though, that SWPC has lost sight of the people part of this latest housing project.

It reminds me of the ugly gray monstrosity with the blue lights that existed at the corner of Elmwood and So. Clinton a few years back. Walgreens was a welcome replacement. Conifer had the opportunity to build something wonderful on prime downtown real estate. What in the world are they thinking???
