Last weekend, I attended the Ithaca Festival in, duh, Ithaca, New York. After enjoying some good eats with my family, I proceeded to throw out our "trash" only to be halted by a festival volunteer monitoring the disposal of all things deemed waste. He informed me that our plastic plates and utensils weren't garbage or recycling but belonged in the third receptacle marked "Composting."
Apparently, our tableware was made of corn and was fully biodegradable. Now, I know Rochester is not Ithaca, but I still want to pose the challenge to our local festival Powers that Be: Can we green up our festivals here? Composting a plate that may as well have been a tortilla felt so good to me. Imagine if you're the impetus that gets thousands of people to do it. Imagine all the people.
