It's Friday night happy hour at the Bug Jar (219 Monroe Avenue, 454-2966, bugjar.com) and Bob Macomber - Bobby Mac to you - is behind the bar, pouring drinks, cracking jokes, flashing his pale blue eyes and shit-eating grin at everybody. An important package shows up. "Let's see what he does with it," says Aaron Gibalski, one of the Bug Jar's owners. Macomber leaves the thing in plain sight. A few minutes pass. Gibalski reminds him about it, and Macomber makes a show out of putting the package down the back of his pants.

Between antics and beer-pouring, Macomber's kind enough to answer some questions. An edited version (I cannot, for instance, disclose Macomber's two favorite smells) follows.

CITY: How long have you worked at the Bug Jar?

Bobby Mac: One and a half years. But I've worked for Aaron for like nine years now. He was my manager at the Park Bench.

So you've been a bartender for a while?

Since I was 21.

Where did you work before?

I was at Dicky's for seven and a half years, then the Park Bench. They basically created the Wednesday-Thursday shift for me here.

What's the best thing about the job?

I get a laugh out of every shift, guaranteed.

How about the worst?

Not so much anymore, but being hung over at 3 p.m. Being tired is one thing. Being tired and hung over is another.

Most obnoxious customer?

[ Macomber points to someone in the corner that's just ordered a round of shots. ] We don't want to mention any names. I'm my own worst customer. Very demanding and never pay for drinks.

How can someone catch your eye at the bar?

They don't have to, ‘cause I'm very organized. That's they key to this job: knowing your surroundings and saving as many steps as you can.

What do you do when you're not at the Jar?

Lots of recovery time.

But what are your hobbies?

I love a good tickle fight. I like to build forts. I enjoy the sights and smells of life.

What's your favorite drink?

A very fine beverage. Don't you want to know what's in it? Stoli raspberry. Unsweetened iced tea. That's very important. Underscore unsweetened. Splash of cranberry. Lemon.

What drink do you sell the most at the bar?

Jager. Jager and bombs.

Anything you'd like to add?

You know how they say if you love your job it makes it easier? Well this job is way easier if you love it.

Bobby Mac tends bar at the Bug Jar during happy hour Wednesdays through Fridays.
