Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about Wegmans' newest restaurant venture, Next Door Bar & Grill, which opened on Monroe Avenue in Pittsford on Friday, December 11. You may also know that the new restaurant has replaced Tastings, Wegmans' first foray into the restaurant business, which opened in 2002 and closed last month. But Next Door Bar & Grill's general manager Alex Berentzen wants to clear up some misconceptions: "Tastings has been doing better than it ever has in the past year, but I like to look at it as leaving a cocktail party before the lights come on," says Berentzen. "People think Tastings moved - Tastings didn't move. Tastings closed, and Next Door Bar & Grill opened."

The new restaurant, now across the street rather than adjacent to the Pittsford Wegmans, is 10,700 square feet, almost double the size of Tastings. The emphasis at Next Door Bar & Grill is to provide a more casual, value-priced option in comparison to the former Tastings' upscale options and prices.

"The name ‘Next Door' is supposed to let you know that this is the place where you come as you are," says Stency Wegman, Next Door Bar & Grill's interior designer and wife of CEO Danny Wegman. "You don't have to dress up. Everyone can come and feel comfortable."

One thing that hasn't changed is executive chef Chris Brandt, who also acted as executive chef at Tastings. Brandt calls the central cuisine New American, but also notes the heavy Japanese influence, evidenced by the two robata grills, centrally located in the main dining area where dining becomes entertainment as patrons watch their food being prepared.

"We want people to say, ‘Man, they delivered the best food and the service was phenomenal,'" says Brandt. "But what we really want is for people to come in and have a great time, and that's what really blows them away."

And while the emphasis is now on creating a casual, fun atmosphere, previous patrons of Tastings will recognize a similar lushness, quality, and eye for detail in both Next Door Bar & Grill's décor and menu. The dishes are diverse, including tapas, casual items like thin-crust pizzas, burgers, and fries, more exotic fare like sushi and sashimi, and a range of innovative entrees like braised veal cheeks, seared black bass, and hearth-baked mac ‘n' cheese. Prices range greatly, from as low as $2 for a piece of sashimi to $24 for the ribeye steak.

Also notable is the restaurant's bar and party rooms. The u-shaped, posh carved bar is flanked by rooms adorned with leather couches and privacy curtains, as well as "the red room," which can be booked for private parties and allows guests to hook up their own iPod to control the playlist. Also worth mentioning is the test kitchen, a private room that can with its own professional kitchen where guests can engage in cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and more.

The Next Door Bar & Grill is located at 3220 Monroe Ave. The restaurant is currently only open for dinner daily 5:30-10 p.m., but will expand into lunch hours in January; the bar is open 4 p.m.-1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Walk-ins welcome, but reservations are highly recommended. For more information, visit nextdoorbarandgrill.com or call 249-4575.

French Quarter opens in new location

Cajun restaurant French Quarter Café, formerly of Arnett Boulevard, has moved to South Goodman Street as of December 3. The new location is the former Martini Grill space across from Parkleigh.

"My intentions were to always open a location in the Park Ave area," says owner Neciah Brown. "We actually tried nine years ago, but it just was not feasible. We just want to make sure our loyal 19th Ward patrons know we definitely appreciate their support, and our move was solely based on the opportunities the new location offered."

The new interior, described by Brown as a work-in-progress, has been revamped from its Martini Grill days. The menu remains the same from the Arnett location, but Brown hopes to serve up some tweaks in February when the restaurant has its official grand opening. By then he hopes to again offer Sunday brunch, as well as try out some new dishes including authentic New Orleans French bread for po' boys, muffuletta, and possibly beignets.

The French Quarter Café is located at 176 S Goodman St. Hours are Wednesday-Saturday 11 a.m.-9 p.m., though those should expand come February. Prices range from $6 to $11. For more information, visit thefrenchquartercafe.org or call 413-1151.

Rooney's offers lunch

The upscale, romantic hideaway Rooney's Restaurant is open for lunch through Wednesday, December 23. Lunch will be offered weekdays 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Reservations are not required, but are recommended. The lunch menu includes salads, appetizers, and entrees including chicken French, wood-grilled beef tenderloin, and house-made ravioli. Prices range from $6 to $19. Rooney's will return to their dinner-only menu at the end of the month. Rooney's is located at 90 Henrietta St. For more information, visit rooneysrestaurant.com or call 442-0444.

Closings

The Corn Hill Market closed its doors earlier this month. The market served as both a convenience store for the neighborhood as well as a lunch spot for its pizza, subs, and salads. Attempts to reach the owner to determine the reason for closing went unreturned, though several Corn Hill residents claim the owner stated he was closing due to lack of business.

Koozinas in Canandaigua has closed. The restaurant was known for its pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and entrees (including its semi-famous grilled St. Louis Thai ribs). Attempts to reach the owner were unsuccessful, though area residents suggest that the restaurant's location, oddly placed in the corner of a quiet plaza, may have contributed to its closing.

"Come as you are" comment is laughable. This restaurant is meant for Pittsford posh. Dressy casual at minimum. As an early 20 something walking through the main entrance, I felt uncomfortable stares from the doorman/security for wearing jeans and winter boots!

Well, Marie from Brighton, it is you that made yourself feel uncomfortable, not the Security guard when you came in. And, if you have to ask yourself if you are dressed ok, the answer more than likely is always "no". I was in the bar in jeans and so was my wife and we felt great! What a hopping place. Try their Truffle Pizza! To die for. Great with the Rohrbach Next Door Ale! We will be back...

Starting outside: it blends in with the mess that is Monroe Ave & the green lights should be a St Pat's day joke, but it seems they are not. Hideous lighting!
Inside, the place is a churning, sprawling, confused, and silly mess. A disco ball? In a lounge room? No. The bar is too big and gives you the best view of "behind the bar" that i have ever seen. No thanks. I'd rather see walls of booze, candles, and mirrors or art.
Tastings was elegant, well-designed, extremely attractive, comfortable & cozy. This new place is like a sprawling suburban warehouse store.
I understand wanting to expand - but why fix what wasn't broken? Tastings had style. This new place is a faux green apple joke.

I have to say I always have high expectations for a Wegmans branded anything, with good reason. So when we finally made it over to their new restaurant I was ready to analyze and critic. I'm going to start by saying that overall we were very very pleased. I thought the layout and decor was so unique to Rochester. So what if the bar and lounge area was completely disconnected from the dining room. The private rooms are a great option for large parties that prefer privacy with the echoing of their own voices verses all the dining patrons. The test kitchen area with library is also appealing for a private party. Read classic cookbooks, play Food Fight the game, and relax in a big comfy leather chair all white steps away from your own personal bar. It's really like all the comforts of a home everyone wishes they had. More importantly though is the food. The food was very satisfying. We sat at the sushi bar and ate almost every sushi option available, even placing a second order after our plates were clear. The sushi chef Satoshi Yamaguchi is extremely charming and friendly. It was like we were invited to his home and he was cooking just for us. Service however slightly fumbled. Two servers came over, one after the other, not realizing who was taking care of us. Our first waiter had to come over and ask again for our drink orders, writing it down the second time. And there was a long wait period in between ordering drinks and food. But again, I went into this dinner with high anticipations, while keeping in mind that they are brand new. The service issues will iron out over time. The food will only get better. I would definitely return, with a big group of my closest friends and family. I can't wait!

Wait, the bar at Next Door is only open from 11:30am - 1pm? An hour and a half? Or is this a typo in City?

Scarlett: That was an error on our part, thank you for pointing it out. The correct bar hours are now listed.

I had dinner with my family on 12/16 at the Next Door Bar & Grill - what a fantastic new restaurant - on par with other Wegman's facilities. The atmosphere, service, and food were outstanding. I've already recommended the restaurant to many others and will definitely go back again SOON!

I fully agree with Regular. One additional noteworthy problem to add - while eating apps in the lounge over drinks at 5:30 - 6:00 ish, the music was blaring, as in house molar shaking loud. And it was really wretched and outdated "adult contemporary" rock a la early 90s... My final vote: the whole scene just felt like it was trying much too hard and still getting much of it wrong. I'll just keep going to Lento and Good Luck. They get it right nearly every time and without so much in your face "see, aren't we greattitude?".

I stopped by here around 4:30pm to buy a 100$ gift certificate for an xmas present and was told matter-of-factly that "gift certificates can only be bought from 10am-4pm". SERIOUSLY??!I Do they not want business???
I even checked their website earlier in the day and noticed that they are only open for dinner after 4pm, so I assumed that they would not be open until then. I can not believe that they will not allow you to BUY gift certificates after 4pm. I will never ever set foot in this place again because of the way I was treated and because of their ridiculous rule.

Meh.....

But!

Nothing is set in stone & the place will change and evolve. So my opinion may change.

I'll give them another chance.

Remember when the original restaurant opened and all the waitresses wore those bizarre bondage outfits?

Wegmans will do what needs to be done to make "Next Door" (but it's Across The Street!) as good as it can be. Give them time.

If you were a big fan of Tastings and are anticipating a similar experience, you will be disappointed. This experience is designed to be different and I think they certainly have achieved their intended goals (for me, being part of a younger crowd, it is better). My favorite place now in the area, though I will be patronizing Northfield's with more frequency because of their financial trouble.

Eliminate the high top closest to the kitchen door in the bar area, have the hosts interact with the guests, they are constantly running around in circles, and do something about the bolts on the lounge coffee tables, my knee still hurts.

Blech. 2nd try - self important, too big, too cold, too loud. The food was so-so (at best - compared to the old place where the food was good) and you gotta ask wtf? about the interior design -- Cold, hard, and weird. Firewood hanging on chains? Trellises? "Eclectic" would be the kind word, instead the truth is that it is spastic and pointless. But, back the food, very disappointing.

I found the bar at NextDoor to be unique for Rochester with a bit of a Vegas flare. I liked it..though the acoustics need attention.
The restaurant was a disappointment. Not being a big sushi fan, we ordered a pasta dish ( so-so) and the roasted chicken. ( scrawny) . The tables for two are tiny and do not leave enough elbow room to fit everything comfortably. The layout of the main dining room felt a bit cafeteria-esque for a restaurant such as this,
Finally, the room that we ate in, to the left of the grill was far too brigh for evening dining.
The server however was fabulous:)

Casual? You bet, my wife and stopped in for drinks after a evening practice session over at Golf Tec shortly after opening day. The place was hopping, a lot of people moving in and around the bar area, we were able to secure two seats at the bar, the staff was attentive without being overbearing, we split some appetizers, a traditional pizza and later some fries , the drinks were great and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. We will be back, next time for dinner...

Next Door is a newer, younger version of Tastings--food and service are first class--the mussels and the sushi are fabulous--have been there twice already! Congratulations!!

This place was amazing, the only meal I've eaten out better than this one was at Tastings. The food was superb, the service the night we went was OK, not fantastic, but still high class. The wine list is enormous. I had the Ribeye, my wife had the Duck special, it was amazing.

My only complaint, LOUD.... It was extremely loud in the main dining room. So much so you have to basically yell across the table to be heard. And we were there on a Thursday night.

Overall though I would definately recommend Next Door, we will be back.

The sashimi was excellent, the service fair and the noise oppressive. I'd go for the food, but.....Tastings was a very different and more comfortable and satisfying experience.

Have to agree that this was a huge disappointment after Tastings. I won't be back. The schizophrenic décor, the odd menu items, the noise - all of that has driven any memory of the food away. Next Door wanted to be different (could they mention FUN any more often on their website?) and they are, but not for the better. They wanted to be more family-friendly, more casual, and still hip. They got the 1st two and totally lack any degree of cool. Still, it'll be a success. This is what suburban parents want; a step up from Bugaboo Creek, but still kiddie-friendly. Any of us who enjoyed something more polished with a real emphasis on excellent cuisine (Tastings) are out of luck here.
