Although inside the Inner Loop and close to the Eastman Theatre, this wonderful Ethiopian restaurant is rather lonely on University, just East of Chestnut. Meals are served the traditional way, on a platter of injera. There are no utensils or plates, which is a great concept in reducing dishwashing expenses. The injera bread is used to pick up the different dishes which are arranged on the platter. The communal nature of eating Ethiopian food is part of the experience.

This is my favorite restaurant in Rochester. Filling, warming, comfort food with unique seasonings and flavors. Lots of vegetarian choices.

Abyssinia is a genuinely wonderful Ethiopian restaurant! My husband and I have eaten at probably 25 Ethiopian restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, and this one is right up at the top! The injera (crepe-like bread) is definitely the best. It's also perfect for vegetarians, because of the vegetarian option--about 6 or 7 wonderfully flavorful stews, each one different. Two notes: The restaurant is misspelled in this entry, and it definitely is not Jamaican!
