Brown Hound focuses on fresh, local, unique, and seasonal foods. Menu offerings range from artichoke and olive tompenade and soy ginger salmon salad to chicken almond amaretto and eggplant parm. The setting includes white linens, tasteful local art, and rustic touches like curtain rods made from branches. The restaurant has a long list of Finger Lakes regional wines and sometimes holds special wine dinners. During the summer, Brown Hound has extended hours as well as live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

The new chef is outstanding. I've eaten here several times this year, and haven't had anything that wasn't absolutely delicious. I especially liked the home made ravioli with goat cheese and asparagus.

We really enjoyed this little place last year alot. This year we have quit going. The breakfast menu is terrible and the service is very slow. Our orders have come wrong and my wifes had to be sent back. The staff seems very lost on what they are doing. Prices are high for the quality and amount of food served. If you want to spend a lot of time waiting this is the place to go, and don't mind when your order finally comes and it is wrong and has to go back. Sorry but we won't ever go again or tell others that it is a place to go.

The Brown Hound Bistro - 12/17/2011
Very Good Food Served in a Warm and Friendly Atmosphere!
The Brown Hound Bistro is one my favorite places to dine. This intimate slightly upscale restaurant is on Rte 64 nestled in the Hamlet of Bristol Springs in the Town of South Bristol, NY. I have been frequenting the Brown Hound for several years after meeting Trish Aser, the Owner and Chef Chief at a Victor Local Development food and wine festival in 2007. It was the unique squash bisque she served and Trishs friendly demeanor that brought me to the Brown Hounds door later that year.
The Brown Hound specializes in using locally sourced produce and meats. The wine list is exclusively Finger Lakes in origin. The menu is massaged weekly to include seasonal produce and special entre offerings. While not locally grown, the Browndog Yellowfin Tuna is one of my favorite entrees. This Sashimi tuna is seared to medium rare and finished a with wasabi-ginger glaze. The portion is more than ample as I usually take some tuna home to top a salad of greens from my garden or greenhouse for lunch the next day.
Since the Brown Hound is 40 minutes from my home in Fishers, New York, I tend to go there for special occasions or while in the Naples, NY area. My most recent visit to the Brown Hound was after hiking in the Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill in South Bristol. This park boasts some of the best views in the Finger Lakes. My date and I enjoyed miles of hiking in newly fallen snow. Then after watching the sunset from the Jump Off, which is almost a thousand feet above the valley below, we headed down the hill to the cozy warmth of the Brown Hound Bistro.
The sun sets early at this time of the year and we arrived at the restaurant just after opening. Because of our timing we were able to be seated in the intimate bay window table for two. This is a great seating for a special occasion such as a first date or anniversary where you want to feel a bit like royalty. You can even close the curtain between this area and the next room for even more privacy.
While not a first date, it was the first time my friend took pleasure in the ambience of the Brown Hound and she enjoyed the experience immensely. As always, the service was attentive and friendly. My friend had the Maple Duck which was succulent and tender served with sides of fingerling potatoes and braised green beans and carrots. I enjoyed the Naples Pasta Company Ravioli of the Day, which on this occasion the ravioli was stuffed with local lamb and goat cheese. Served in a white wine garlic sauce with peas and shaved carrots my dish was a bit heavy after having already consumed the excellent mushroom soup du jour. A much better compliment for my entree, at least for me, would have been a salad instead of the soup.
All dishes were presented well. The bottle of Rooster Hill Vineyards Estate Cabernet Franc/Lemberger wine that we shared was a nice paring for our meals. Barely having room for dessert, yet know everything was made in house, my friend and I decided to split a crème bulee which was also excellent.
I highly recommend the Brown Hound Bistro. Not only is the food much to my liking, the character of the place is charming. Local artist display their work and most Saturday nights Bill Brown performs blues guitar. Days open and hours served do vary depending on the season so it is good to call (585) 9771 or check the website www.brownhoundbistro.com before driving any great distance. Also because the restaurant only seats 20 patrons during the colder months is a good idea to have reservations.
