A small-scale Japanese restaurant with a homey feel, Edoya serves the usual sushi/sashimi, but also has some unusual items. A sushi connoisseur recommends the takoyaki, fried balls stuffed with octopus, ginger, and cabbage, served with a tart sauce. Another winner is the calamari salad with lots of kikurage mushrooms.

My husband and I came here for dinner in the middle of the week. At first glance, we noticed the 4 tables with either chairs or booths, of the lowest quality for business standard, thereby deciding to sit at the sushi bar. We were served tea immediately. In the above review, it states that this restaurant has "some unusual items," I requested some common Japanese items eaten in Japan that were not on the menu, but was told they did not have it.
It is true that it is owned by a Japanese family, but that by no means gives them the right to overcharge on trivial items such as wasabi (I've never been to a restaurant to charge for wasabi). In addition, the miso soup was cold even after we requested it to be heated, the sashimi regular order was thrown in haphazardly into a small bowl, and we were received very rudely from the family. Just a warning for a few of Rochester's residents,

Edoya is a typical Japanese home style restaurant with excellent food. Having been a regular for 3 or 4 years, I find the food consistently excellent and the atmosphere very homey and friendly. It helps if you speak Japanese, but it is not necessary and the Kamiyama family take excellent care of their guests.

Rude? I don't believe it for a second. The Kamiyamas are some of the nicest people you will find anywhere on earth. This is home-style sushi at it's best. The chef makes all his own sauces, his tamago is especially delicious. I have been to Japan several times and in my humble opinion this is the best sushi Rochester has to offer. No fancy decor, lighting etc. and I, for one, like it that way.

I have been to this place multiple times, and have never experienced the problems JenC mentioned. My Japanese class used to come here all the time, and they did have several things you cannot find anywhere else in Rochester(or even around the country!). In particular, we came several times for nabe(japanese hotpot). Their sushi is authentic and the most fresh and delicious I have had outside in New York.

I agree with Ron, Ive never been treated rudely by this family, even when I show up a little early for my take out, they always allow me to have a seat and even give me tea, at no charge. How do I know Im not charged? Because I already paid my bill. As small of a family owned place this is, they even deliver. I used them once for delivery and was impressed my how quick my order arrived. I think reviewer JenC already had a bad taste in her mouth because the booths werent up to her standard maybe? True while there are other places in the area that may "appear" nicer, the quality of service normally sucks. I love this place, one of my favorites is the Edoya roll. And its always fresh, especially the tuna tataki, another one of my favorites. I gave it 5 stars based on taste, service, price and location. Oh and as for the miso soup, Ive never had a problem. I ordered sushi over the summer and had something come up, and 3 hours later I opened the take home cup and it was still warm.

Okay so the place is not pretty or fancy inside or out but WOW the food is great! The Edoya Roll is my favorite and I always get the calamari salad. I have been here many times both eating in and taking out and I have never had anything but the most courteous service and the freshest food. I am just so thrilled to have sushi of this quality in Rochester and especially on the West Side.
