Built in 1916, one year before the arrival of the Stutson Street Bridge, Hose 22 firehouse was once the crown jewel of Charlotte. In 2007, the building was meticulously restored, including the wrought iron balcony that once adorned the front of the structure. The Hose 22 Firehouse Grill, named for the hose company that resided in the firehouse until 1962, is an American-style grill with a firehouse theme. The menu is broken into five sections, "1st Alarm" through "5th Alarm," and includes appetizers, salads, pizzas, sandwiches, and entrees. The firehouse theme doesn't end there: diners can order items prepared by former Jimmy Mac's chef Josh Maier like the "back draft chicken sandwich," "rescue Reuben," or "brush fire pasta"; the signature item is the "engine house ribs."

My wife and I ate here on Saturday night. My NY strip steak was properly prepared, medium rare, but my wife has the Fire Chief's Favorite, a pasta dish with torneadoes of steak in gorgonzola sauce. The sauce was insipid and the meat lacked any flavor. It was the only disappointment. The portion was huge. We never could fit in dessert. The beer menu is nice, with a good range of bottles and draft. Overall a good vibe, loud, but what place isn't these days, especially Saturday night.

We spent about sixty dollars, but if you went with burgers, sandwiches, etc I think you could still have a nice cheap date night. Parking is tricky, watch the street signs if you can't find a space in the lot.

Wow...has this place come along way! On a nice day with the front doors open, the outdoor dining feels like Manhattan or Montreal! The steak my husband and I had was the best, and the service was speedy and efficient. We waited for a table for about an hour, but it was worth it. Outdoors was even a longer wait, but we sat in dining room and heard the carpet was new that day, and the noise level was totally fine with a packed house. Nice job folks, a huge improvement from last time I was there in the winter! Can't wait to go back.
