Part of the reason people keep coming back to Jim's is the service, and the sense of being at home. Others come because it's one of the area's undisputed bargains: there are few restaurants where you can get a substantial breakfast for under five bucks. Jim's certainly turns out great breakfast fare, but the cooks put out a mean lunch as well. A patty melt or a turkey reuben are both great choices; unlike lesser diners, Jim's makes its own patties and cuts its turkey from the bone rather than something pre-shaped and packaged. And then there are the pies. Owner Elena Knapp makes her own -- try her homemade lemon cream with a nice strong cup of their fresh-brewed coffee.

We're always on the lookout for nice family diners and "Jim's" on Winton certainly fills the bill: good food, cheerful efficient service and reasonable prices.

The only problem is, as the man said: "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded" - - at least when we've gone there (breakfast). There always seems to be a line out the door waiting for a seat!

Recently opened is a "Jim's Too" ("Elena's") where the former Penguin Restaufant was, about 700 East Main Street - across from the old Eastman Dental Dispensary.

Elena is Jim's wife, I gather and she's brought everything good about "Jim's" to this new venue: good prices and quick, cheerful, efficient and well, yes, very attractive service.

I almost hate to mention "Jim's Too," though, because as much as I wish Elena success, I don't want her place to get as crowded as the original "Jim's" ib Winton.

Still, it's great to see that a traditional family diner can open up and make a good go of it in these days of boutique restaurants.
