Small and cozy, Shiki features an amazing array of distinctive appetizers like broiled eggplant with sweet miso (nasu-den) and eel with vegetables (amadai sakamushi). And the sushi is excellent.

Shiki is a really lovely little restaurant. They have delicious, fresh sushi, wonderful and varied appetizers, and a full menu of cooked food for your raw-fish-wary dining companions. In addition to having great food, the atmosphere is nice-- the dining room has a surprisingly uncluttered feel despite its small size, the decor is tasteful and low-key, and the wait staff is friendly and cheerful. I'd definitely recommend Shiki over any other sushi restaurant within the city limits; it has better food than both Plum House and California Rollin', and a calmer, quieter atmosphere than Golden Port/House of Sushi.

Just go in and allow yourself be amazed with unpretentious Japanese foods and environment. For some reason, my fiancee and I always prefer this unassuming Japanese restaurant over any other Japanese restaurants in Rochester. Even though it's small and always packed during the weekend, the waiting part is always justified by excellent foods and service.
