On a sunny, absolutely gorgeous late summer morning, I found my way to Parkside Avenue, a lovely, quiet street that runs “behind” Webster Park near the intersection of Webster Avenue and Bay Street on the city’s northeast side.
It had been a while since I visited my old neighborhood and it felt good to see City School No. 33 still perched on the edge of this multi-functional city park where my children attended school, played baseball and football, visited the Sully Branch Library, the Webster Avenue Community Center, and scooted up and down the fields and playground equipment. Nothing has changed, it is all still there.
As nice as the street is, 124 Parkside Avenue, an American Foursquare, built in 1926, with approximately 1,588 sq. ft., is even nicer. From inside to outside, top to bottom, I was pleased at the opportunity to visit such a class-act, city home.
Even before I entered the house, I was impressed by the well landscaped front yard with its large hosta garden in full August bloom and a neighbor-friendly front porch.
Inside, one surprise led to another. First to catch my attention was an alcove that may truly be unique or at least rare in a house of this age and size. With a brick floor and half-walls, this alcove now houses a wood-burning stove, healthy plants in front of two windows, and a ceiling fan. It’s almost an extra room that could turn into almost anything you would like it to be.
The current owners, who have lived here for several years, have not only kept up this house beautifully, they have made it into a showcase for city living. There are highly polished hardwood floors and ceiling fans in almost every room. The paint is fresh, the wallpaper, attractive. The basement has its own half bath, nine-year-old furnace, six-year-old water heater and washer and dryer. The remodeled attic, with two dormers, carpeting, a large closet, ceiling fan, and effective natural and artificial lighting, is a bedroom or office suite that anyone would covet.

On the second floor are three bedrooms, each with a closet and at least one window. The master bedroom has a separate dressing area and walk-in closet. The full bathroom, with ceramic walls and floor tiles, looks like it was remodeled yesterday.
I’m glad I saved the best for last. Outside, on a lot and a half, proudly stands an 18 ft-. round, above ground swimming pool, a two-car garage with storage-space tucked into its high roof, and lots more landscaping.
